T5erbeesh: Elbohly | البوهلي


Elbohly, whose sobriquet translates to 'the crazy one’, is a self-taught Libyan street graffiti artist who aims to express the struggle and voice of the Libyan youth through encouraging a vibrant art and graffiti culture in Libya. He was part of an underground artistic movement in Tripoli and is one of the pioneers of graffiti in Libya with his dissident work that predates the February 2011 Revolution.

His art began to gain more public recognition during the revolution as his work became used in many music videos created by Libyan youth. However, Elbohly not only gained local attention, but also international support. He was the only Libyan participant in an ‘Images Festival’ in 2013 where he was invited by a Danish organisation called ‘Turning Tables’, whose goal is to empower youth from globally marginalised communities through music, film, and creative and artistic ways of expression.

Elbohly has participated in several festivals since, in Libya (Human Rights Day 2013), Tunisia (Human Rights Day 2014), Denmark, Holland, Belgium (European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) Forum, Brussels 2014), and in the London-based 'Shubbak Festival 2015’. He was also invited by the Immigrants’ Museum in Denmark to tell his life story through a mural, and was featured, along with Hadia Gana, a female Libyan artist living in France, and two other people, in a documentary that aims to highlight “successful” Libyans in Europe. 


البوهلي، اللقب الي يعني “المجنون”، فنان قرافيتي ليبي يهدف الي التعبير علي صوت الشباب الليبي من خلال تشجيع تقافة نشطة للفن و القرافيتي في ليبيا. كان جزءا من حركة فنية في طرابلس و  لا يزال واحد من رواد القرافيتي في ليبيا.


فنه يسبق ثورة فبراير 2011، و لكن بدآ في اكتساب شهرة خلال الثورة حيث أصبح عمله يستخدم في العديد من مقاطع الفيديو الموسيقية التي أنشأها الشباب الليبي. لم يكتسب البوهلي اهتماما محليا فقط، بل دعم دولي أيضا. كان هو المشارك الليبي الوحيد في "مهرجان الصور" في عام 2013 حيث تم دعوه من قبل  "Turning Tables" منظمة دانماركية تدعى

والتي تهدف إلى تمكين الشباب من المجتمعات المهمشة عالميا من خلال تشجيع الموسيقى والأفلام والطرق الإبداعية  والفنية للتعبير


شارك إلبوهلي في العديد من المهرجانات منذ ذلك الحين، في ليبيا (يوم حقوق الإنسان 2013)، تونس (يوم حقوق الإنسان 2014)، الدنمارك، هولندا، بلجيكا (المنتدى الأوروبي للديمقراطية وحقوق الإنسان، بروكسل 2014) لندن "مهرجان شوباك 2015".  تم دعيه متحف المهاجرين في الدنمارك ليرسم قصة حياته من خلال القرافيتي، وظهر مع هادية غانا، فنانة ليبية تعيش في فرنسا، وشخصان آخران، في فيلم وثائقي يهدف إلى تسليط الضوء على " الناجح "الليبي في أوروبا.


A recent piece of his in Ringsted is a mural dedicated to the memory of the 18-year-old Libyan peace activist Tawfik Ben Saud, who was killed for voicing his opposition for extremism and violence. The mural also acts as a tribute to Libyans who continue to risk their lives in the fight for freedom, rights and justice despite the odds.

لوحة في رينغستيد عبارة عن جدارية مخصصة لذكرى الناشط الليبي للسلام توفيق بن سعود، الذي قتل عندما كان في الثامنة عشرة من عمره بسبب معارضته للتطرف والعنف. الجدارية أيضا تحيي الليبيين الذين ما زالوا يخاطرون بحياتهم في الكفاح من أجل الحرية والحقوق والعدالة لصعاب


His graffiti piece of 'Fatima's Hand' and the 'Owl' that carried the message of: 'Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil’. The owl, a sign of bad luck, represents the Libyan people, while Fatma’s hand, a symbol for protecting people from the evil eye, represents the role of culture in restricting freedom of expression.

"My name is Elbohly, I'm a Street artist and a calligrapher from Tripoli-Libya, based in Copenhagen-Denmark.

My paintings is my feelings and mood swings, I chose street art and graffiti because of my love to hiphop culture as I used to listen to oldschool hiphop and did some underground cyphers, and break dance too long ago.

I got in touch with my oriental roots and Islamic culture as I traveled and moved abroad from Libya. I started blending calligraphy and typography, Islamic patterns within my art

Ambitious to fight to inspire the Libyan young generation and revive the beauty of Islamic culture In my own street knowledge vision, 

As a Painter learning something new daily is a basic thing to survive the mental gym and keep the muscles of my brain healthy and connect every energy and emotions to my imagination because reality is the fantasy and fantasy is the reality"

Iconic Libyan Landmarks is a project that aims to portray the stories behind architectural monuments that mold our Libyan culture, history, and identity.

T5erbeesh: The Girl in the Troglodyte

 Zaha Shtewi

This poem is inspired by the 7osh al 7afar or troglodyte dwellings in Gheryan, where I'm from. I combined imagery of picking olives/nature and the supernatural which is what I correlate the 7osh al 7afar with in my head after all of the old stories from my grandparents. 

She sat in her tight braids,

legs folded on the skin of the

sheep her father

slaughtered years ago, the smell

of those years lingered too.

Crushing beneath her fingers a

handful of ripened olives, the hefty

stone was still caked in dust

her Mother said it would give

the oil a taste of the Earth.


Clay jars filled to the brim

with virgin olive oil covered the

room she shared with her family.

Pottery of various sizes and

hues hung from the walls, an

Exhibition of some sorts.


The sound of a brother calling the

athan from a nearby hilltop

coupled with the evening chirps of

settling birds, woke her up

from the stupor of the incident.


A veil between another world

And our own, that the Creator

wove with wise intention,

Had been torn at the base

Of the troglodyte, 7osh al 7afar.


Earlier, as she was perched

in an olive tree, picking ripe

zeytun... that would soon be

mercilessly pressed for

their delectable oil, a winter



The jinn floated by

right as the

Sun stood in the middle of

the sky, bare and brass.

barrier broken.

He squinted right up,

leaning right

at the base of the nearly stripped
